New desired gTLDs -an incredible move of ICANN…

A new era is going to begin in the realm of domain name and internet industry that will change the entire scenario. You must know that now entrepreneurs, government, communities and many more can register and operate gTLDs of their own choice. Now days there are nearly just two dozen gTLDs but soon this number will be in hundreds.

According to ICANN, any entity from all over world can register and operate a new gTLD of their own choice such as .airtel, .business, .school, .facebook, .shopping and many more. For this the applicant will need to pay a sum of $185,000; additional costs can also be there in certain cases. The application period was from 12 Jan 2012 to 12 April 2012.

Applying for new gTLDs is not as easier as buying a new domain; it is more complex process because the applicant will have to work as registry that will support the internet’s Domain Name System.

The concept of IDN has also been introduced by the ICANN. IDN stands for Internationalized Domain Name. IDN will facilitate the use of characters used in local representation of languages apart from Latin alphabet A-Z.

Applicants have already applied for the desired gTLDs using the “TLD Application System” (TAS). After the verification of all the applications, ICANN has announced the public portion of applications.

Further the evaluation process is going on that will take approximately 9 to 20 months. Third parties can file complaints and objections against any application if the applicant is using their brand name or trademark.
